Those who are familiar with the Volante Design origin story will know that this all started while David was in college in a small spare bedroom. There simply wasn’t a company out there making high-quality jackets that could both capture the essence of video game characters while also being functional and durable. You had a choice of boring but rugged standard jackets, or ill-fitting, flimsy costumes and nothing else.

And so Volante Design was born.

As a small American-made company we do a lot of things ourselves in house. After David designs a concept, it’s passed to our production manager, Emily, to prototype. The research and development of a new product may take many prototypes and tests before they’re approved to move on to material sourcing. We take care to source high quality materials for maximum comfort and durability.

Once we’ve settled on materials, our cutter David Y. (yes, a different David) spreads and cuts all of the pattern pieces in-house. He makes sure each piece in each size and color is organized and accounted for, down to the very last zipper and snap, before driving it to the sewing studio right in the heart of New York’s fashion district. Our designs are not your standard suit jacket and vest combo, however, so finding the right studio that can handle the complexity of our designs to the exacting standards that we expect was difficult.

Once the products are finished, they come back in-house for the quality control process. We are very meticulous about our standards of quality and any repairs needed are handled in-house. This is also the point in the process where some products are deemed “Oddities” and are put in the Rare Finds and Oddities sale.
